Viability Scan

This is an ultrasound examination that is usually carried out either through the abdomen or vagina from 6 weeks of pregnancy. It can determine whether the pregnancy is continuing normally within the uterus as well as determining the number of fetuses.

Although the vast majority of pregnancies are normal, this scan can help to detect the 3-5% of pregnancies which are lost in the first trimester as well as detecting an ectopic pregnancy, i.e. a pregnancy outside the womb.
From 10 to 14 weeks of pregnancy, this scan can also give the most accurate estimated due date based on the Crown Rump Length (CRL) of the baby as well as allowing an early detailed examination of the fetal anatomy.
