Clinicians Biographies

Mr. Ruwan Wimalasundera Bsc, MBBS, MRCOG

Mr. Wimalasundera is Consultant Obstetrician and Fetal Medicine specialist at the world renowned Centre for Fetal Care (CFC) at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital in Hammersmith. This is a tertiary level, regional fetal medicine unit that caters for all aspects of contemporary fetal medicine. He trained as a doctor at Kings College School of Medicine, London and has been a consultant at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital for 4 years after having completed his Sub-specialist training in the same unit.

He specialises in the management of multiple pregnancies including complicated monochorionic pregnancies. The CFC has become a national referral centre for the treatment of Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome in monochorionic twins; using fetoscopic laser ablation to placental vessels.

He also works very closely with the paediatric cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital and runs a joint cardiology clinic where he manages all pregnancies where a fetal cardiac anomaly has been diagnosed at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital.

DR Ruth Pearson FRCR

Was appointed in 1981 as Consultant Radiologist with special responsibility for obstetric and gynaecological imaging to the Westminster Hospital professorial obstetric unit then located at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.

She is currently Consultant Radiologist at Kingston and Queen Mary’s Hospitals and is lead in gynaecological imaging, joint lead in obstetric imaging and lead clinician in breast services.

She was visiting Consultant at Harris Birthright Research Centre, Kings College Hospital fetal medicine unit between 1998 and 2002 and was responsible for inception of the obstetric nuchal service at Queen Mary’s Hospital which was one of the units whose results were used in the early research into nuchal translucency.

She performs regular sessions at Kingston and Queen Mary’s Hospitals in all aspects of obstetric and gynaecological imaging, including sessions in the acute gynaecological and early pregnancy unit.

DR Mary Roddie B Med Sci, BM BS, FRCP, FRCR

Dr Roddie has been a Consultant Radiologist at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust since 1991 and has practised at The New Victoria Hospital since 1995. She specialises in cross-sectional imaging with a major interest in gynaecological and obstetric ultrasound. She has undergone specialist training and is certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation to perform nuchal translucency scans.
